Kitchen & Bath Trends for 2011

The National Kitchen and Bath Association recently released its 2011 kitchen and bath study predicting trends for 2011.

1) Open and accessible floorplans for a kitchen. Who wants to be stuffed up all alone cooking?

2) Quartz is quickly gaining popularity for kitchen/bathroom counters. It is beautiful, low-maintence and very durable.

3) Going green - literally. The calming, earth-tone color is being requested more and more for the paint selection in bathrooms and kitchens.

4) Dark natural and deep reddish-brown maples finishes are in this year for cabinetry and floors.

5) With the down economy people are finding ways to pamper themselves at home, and turning up the luxury factor. Such as spa-like bathrooms to multiple shower heads, and built-in wine cabinets.

6) High tech kitchens - french door refrigerators, inductions stovetops, etc.

7) Eco-Aware kitchens/bathrooms. Sustainabilty is becoming more & more requested. Bamboo flooring, LED Lighting, garbage disposals/trash compactors, and sustainable furnishings.

8) Modern industrial vanities in bathrooms, with finished metal and vessel sinks. Dual sinks are a must for master bathrooms.

9) Hardwood and tile remain a staple, but bamboo flooring is gaining popularity.

Decorating with Stripes

Stripes promote order in an interior and can really make a statement. They are low-risk and easy to incorporate in type of room, whether it be traditional or modern.

RealSimple.com suggests three guidlines for decorating with stripes:

1- Use high-contrast stripes in unexpected places. Great places for these are in powder bathrooms or foyers (somewhere where people don't linger too long).

2- Match the size of the stripe to the size of the room. The larger the space the wider the stripes should be.

3- Blend striped, floral and solid accessories.

What's Your Style?

Ten Questions to Ask Yourself....

1) What type of surroundings make you happy? A simple and airy room, or a cozy book filled room with a large comfy chair?

2) Can you stand a messy room? Or do you prefer order?

3) What is your favorite room in the house? And your least?

4) Are you a city girl (or guy) or a casual country girl (or guy)?

5) How much time, energy , money can you put into your home right now? Next month? In a year?

6) If you could make a change to one thing in your home, what would it be?

7) Do you have a favorite piece of furniture, accessory, or artwork that could be a starting point to your room?

8) If you could take a dream vacation anywhere in the world, where would it be? Could you translate that feeling into your home?

9) Is there someone in your life that inspires you? How do they live?

10) Do your decorating dreams correlate to the way you actually live? Does a formal dining room fit well into your laid back lifestyle?

In addition, start keeping an 'Inspiration Notebook.' Staple torn out magazine photos of rooms, fabric swatches, and decorating ideas that appeal to you.
